Germain Larivière is a name synonymous with quality, innovation, and family values in Quebec’s furniture and home appliance retail sector. From humble beginnings in the 1950s to becoming a leading independent retailer in Canada, the story of Germain Larivière is one of resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to customer satisfaction.

Early Life and Entrepreneurial Spirit

Born on April 26, 1922, in Saint-Côme, Beauce, Quebec, Germain Larivière exhibited entrepreneurial tendencies from a young age. By the age of 11, he was already involved in the retail world, gaining experience as a deliveryman, salesman, and eventually managing the furniture and floor covering department in a local department store. This early exposure laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the retail industry.

The Birth of a Retail Empire

On November 15, 1957, at the age of 31, Germain Larivière opened his first store in Sainte-Rosalie (now part of Saint-Hyacinthe), Quebec. Operating out of a renovated woodworking shop, the store specialized in furniture and floor coverings. With the support of his wife, Gertrude, and his father, Théodore, the business quickly gained traction, known for its quality products and exceptional customer service.

Innovation in the 1960s and 70s

The 1960s were a period of consolidation and learning. Germain focused on ensuring a steady supply of merchandise, securing financing, hiring competent staff, and marketing his store effectively. By the end of the decade, the business had expanded its showroom and warehouse space, tripling in size, and employed 12 regular staff members and three part-timers.

The 1970s marked a significant turning point. Germain’s son, Jean Larivière, joined the company, bringing fresh ideas and energy. Under Jean’s influence, the company became the first in Quebec’s furniture retail sector to computerize its accounting system, showcasing a commitment to innovation. The decade also saw the introduction of television and radio advertising, further boosting the company’s profile and sales.

Expansion and Challenges in the 1980s and 90s

The 1980s were characterized by rapid growth. With a focus on major provincial media outlets, the company carved out a significant market share. Sales tripled, and the workforce grew to nearly 70 employees. The company’s reputation for efficient administration, dynamic staff, and quality service became well-established.

The early 1990s brought both challenges and opportunities. In 1990, a devastating fire destroyed the store, leaving Germain and his team to contemplate the future. Demonstrating resilience, the company quickly set up temporary facilities and began reconstruction. By the mid-1990s, the store had not only been rebuilt but had also expanded, employing 90 people and continuing its growth trajectory

The New Millennium: A Family Legacy Continues

As the company entered the 21st century, the second generation of the Larivière family took the helm. Jean and his brother David, fresh from university, brought new energy and ideas. Under their leadership, the company expanded its footprint, opening a second store in Laval and a third in the renowned Quartier DIX30 in Brossard. A new distribution center was also established, supporting the company’s growing operations.

Today, Germain Larivière operates three mega stores located in Laval, Brossard (DIX30), and Saint-Hyacinthe, employing over 200 people. The company’s commitment to quality, innovation, and customer service remains unwavering, solidifying its position as a leader in Quebec’s retail landscape.

Commitment to Sustainability and Community

Beyond business growth, Germain Larivière has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. The company has significantly reduced its ecological footprint by recycling over 73,579 kilograms of recovered materials, showcasing its dedication to responsible business practices.

Additionally, the company has embraced digital transformation, launching an e-commerce platform to meet the evolving needs of its customers. This move ensures that customers can access Germain Larivière’s products and services conveniently, reflecting the company’s adaptability in a changing retail environment.
